A book paying tribute to shelters dogs, their caregivers & their new families

Titan came into Julie’s and Keith’s lives one Saturday more than 20 years ago and they are forever grateful.  Titan’s Tales and Other Dog Adoption Love Stories tells a few of Titan’s tales, along with stories of more than 38 other rescued dogs.

All of the proceeds from the sale of Titan’s Tales and Other Dog Adoption Love Stories that are sold at shelters and other rescue organizations go directly to those organizations.  We have outlets in various parts of South Carolina, Michigan and Georgia.

If you know of an organization who would like copies of Titan’s Tales to sell or give away to raise money, please email Titan’s mom at julie@focusunlimitedpr.com.  And please adopt!  Our newest family member is Shelton, an older rescue shorty Jack Russell Terrier. Cassie, Shelton and their mom and dad hope this little bit goes a long way to help other pups in situations like Titan, Cassie and Shelton were in before we found each other and became a family.  Titan’s spirit lives on in our hearts and in his tales, and we are blessed to have had him in our lives for 15 glorious years.

About the Author and Her Rescue Pups

Hi, I’m Julie Chalpan, and I hope you enjoy reading Titan’s Tales as much as I did talking to all of the wonderful people in the book and writing down their stories.

As Titan got older, I wanted to write down tales about him, so that I could always remember some of his funny, wonderful stories.  As many people do, I got the idea at 3 a.m. one morning to not just tell his story, but several stories of rescue dogs and their parents.  The idea for Titan’s Tales and Other Dog Adoption Love Stories was born.

When I’m not playing with shelter dogs, going to adoption events and other shelter dog-related activities, I manage my public relations firm, Focus Unlimited, which I’ve had for more than 25 years.

This is such a happy ending (or hopefully “middle”) for me, as I had cardiac asthma and terrible allergies as a child.  Not only could I not have a dog of my own, I could barely be near them.  I was blessed to outgrow the cardiac asthma and my allergy to dogs, and was so glad to be able to be Titan’s mama, as well as now mama to Cassie & Shelton, and aunt to so many other dogs!

In 1999 we found the best boy in the whole world at an adoption event in Gwinnett County at a PetSmart.  Gwinnett County Humane Society was there, and since we had been looking for a while to find our furever love, when I drove up that day one of the volunteers, who by now had become a friend, was waiting for me outside.  She just knew I’d come because she had the perfect pup for us. Titan was about 2 years old, they thought, house trained, and the most handsome boy I’d ever seen.  Most likely Jack Russell Terrier mixed with Beagle, he was definitely the boy of my dreams.  I called Keith to meet me there and that was on Halloween.  From that day forward, Titan Boo stole our hearts and we loved him so much.  More of the story is in the first chapter of Titan’s Tales.

In February 2012 we found our baby girl, Cassiopeia, or Cassie for short, at Brooke’s Haven Animal Rescue in Bluffton, SC.  Just about eight weeks old, she had only been there a few minutes when I happened to drop by.  She, along with her three brothers, were brought to the Lowcountry by Tallulah McGee of HAND and Beaufort County Animal Shelter, who rescued them.  Cassie was with over 40 other dogs in a hoarding situation near Chattanooga, TN.  Cassie (then Claire) was the only girl in the litter and I knew she needed to come home with me.  Sure enough, Keith went back with me and Cassie came home with us.  She and Titan quickly became inseparable – she loved her big brother and he loved his little sister (even when she was a pest, as little sisters can be – I should know, I’m a little sister!).  We are so blessed to have Cassie in our lives.

In May 2014, Shelton, the big guy, came into our lives.  Raintree Jacks in Cassatt, SC, is run by a marvelous couple who have hearts for rescuing Jack Russell Terriers.  We made the drive to Cassatt to meet 11 JRTs they had at the time and suspected we would fall in love with Shelton, which we did. He was middle-aged, at 5 or 6 or so. Cassie liked him almost immediately and we brought him home.  So many things about Shelton remind of us of our sweet boy, Titan, and we know that Titan would approve and love Shelton as much as we all do.

Book Signings

We have a lot of fun at book signings and adoption events!  We’re so blessed to have been invited by book stores, libraries, animal shelters, church groups, women’s clubs, and other places to read and sign our books, raising money for rescues.  Titan even got to attend a couple of the events, and now Cassie & Shelton go with us when they can.  Even my Dad got in on the action as part of the fundraising efforts for the Field of Dreams Dog Park in my hometown of Buchanan, Michigan!  If your group would like a speaker and to raise money for animal rescues, let us know.  We’d love to help.
